What is your dosha?

In Ayurveda, your constitution — your Prakriti — is the unique balance of three elemental energies that have been with you since birth: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Most people lean strongly toward one or two of them.

The free quiz below is an educational self-assessment based on traditional Ayurvedic frameworks. It runs entirely in your browser, takes about 10 minutes, and produces a downloadable PDF summary you can keep or share with Eileen at your consultation. Below the quiz you'll find an in-depth description of each dosha — what it looks like in balance, what it looks like out of balance, and the practices that bring it back into harmony.

The Three Doshas

Understand your results

Each dosha has its own physical and mental signature — and its own way of going out of balance. Find your dominant dosha below for a deeper picture of what your results mean and what to do with them.

Air + Ether

Vata वात

Light, dry, cold, mobile, subtle, rough, irregular, quick.

What does Vata look like in the body?

Slim build, thin frame, prominent joints, dry skin and hair, cold hands and feet, irregular digestion (sometimes hungry, sometimes not).

How does Vata show up in the mind?

Quick learner, creative, enthusiastic, talkative, easily distracted. Tends to start many projects, finish fewer.

In Balance

Energetic, imaginative, joyful, communicative. Sleeps lightly but well. Quick to inspire others.

Out of Balance

Anxious, worried, restless, overwhelmed. Constipation, dry skin, joint pain, light or interrupted sleep, scattered thinking.

What helps Vata stay balanced?

  • Warm, cooked, oily, grounding foods (root vegetables, ghee, soups, stews)
  • Regular daily routine (Dinacharya) — same wake time, meal time, bedtime
  • Slow, grounding yoga: forward folds, restorative poses, Yin
  • Self-massage with warm sesame oil (Abhyanga)
  • Limit cold, raw, dry, leftover food
  • Bedtime by 10pm, morning meditation

Fire + Water

Pitta पित्त

Hot, sharp, oily, light, intense, penetrating, slightly liquid.

What does Pitta look like in the body?

Medium muscular build, warm skin (often flushed, freckled, or with moles), strong appetite, regular digestion, sharp eyes, premature graying or thinning hair common.

How does Pitta show up in the mind?

Sharp intellect, focused, ambitious, organized, decisive. Strong will, sometimes critical or perfectionist.

In Balance

Confident, articulate, courageous, naturally a leader. Strong digestion, healthy appetite, good metabolism.

Out of Balance

Irritable, impatient, judgmental, perfectionist. Heartburn, acid reflux, skin rashes, inflammation, anger, overheated.

What helps Pitta stay balanced?

  • Cooling, sweet, slightly bitter foods (cucumber, mint, coriander, leafy greens, sweet fruits)
  • Avoid spicy, fried, fermented, sour, and excessively salty foods
  • Cool moonlight walks, swimming, time in nature
  • Moderate-pace yoga: gentle vinyasa, twists, forward folds (avoid heated rooms)
  • Regular meals — Pitta gets cranky when hungry
  • Self-massage with cooling coconut oil
  • Bedtime by 10pm; cool, dark sleeping environment

Earth + Water

Kapha कफ

Heavy, slow, cool, oily, smooth, dense, soft, stable, cloudy.

What does Kapha look like in the body?

Sturdy, larger frame, soft skin, thick lustrous hair, slow metabolism, steady energy. Tends to gain weight easily and lose it slowly.

How does Kapha show up in the mind?

Calm, patient, loyal, methodical. Excellent long-term memory but slower to learn new things. Steady and grounded.

In Balance

Loving, compassionate, forgiving, dependable. Strong immunity, deep restful sleep, steady moods.

Out of Balance

Lethargic, congested, attached, complacent. Weight gain, water retention, sinus congestion, sluggish digestion, depression, possessiveness.

What helps Kapha stay balanced?

  • Light, warm, dry, spicy, bitter foods (legumes, leafy greens, ginger, black pepper)
  • Limit dairy, sweet foods, fried foods, and overeating in general
  • Vigorous yoga: Surya Namaskar, Kundalini, dynamic Hatha
  • Daily cardio — brisk walks, hiking, biking, swimming
  • Wake before 6am — Kapha hours (6am–10am) are when sluggishness sets in
  • Dry-brushing (Garshana) before showers to stimulate circulation
  • Reduce daytime napping; vary the routine to prevent stagnation

Common Questions

About the Dosha Quiz

How long does the dosha quiz take?
Most people finish the assessment in 8 to 12 minutes. The questions cover physical traits, mental tendencies, and digestion patterns. You can save and resume anytime — your answers are stored privately in your browser.
Is the quiz a medical diagnosis?
No. The dosha quiz is an educational self-assessment based on traditional Ayurvedic frameworks. It is not a medical diagnosis and is not a substitute for care from a licensed healthcare provider. For deeper analysis or imbalance work, book a consultation with Eileen.
Where do my answers go?
Nowhere except your own browser. The quiz runs entirely client-side and stores your progress in localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server. The downloadable PDF is generated in your browser too.
What do I do with my results?
Read the descriptions of your dominant dosha below, download the PDF summary, and consider booking an Ayurvedic Consultation with Eileen for a personalized plan. Knowing your Prakriti is just the first step — Vikriti (current imbalances) and lifestyle factors round out the picture.
Can I be more than one dosha?
Yes — most people are a blend of two doshas (Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, Vata-Kapha) with a smaller influence from the third. A small number of people are tridoshic, meaning all three are roughly balanced. Your quiz results show the dominant dosha; a consultation explores the full picture.
