Reviewed by Eileen Sibley · M.S. Ayurveda candidate, MIU ·

Named after Brahma, the creator god — and rightly so. Brahmi has been used for centuries by Ayurvedic scholars and meditators to expand awareness, sharpen memory, and cool the agitated mind. Modern research has caught up: this water-loving plant is one of the most thoroughly studied nootropic herbs in the world.

  • Easing the heat of irritation, frustration, and impatience
  • Supporting healthy hair and scalp when applied as oil

Modern Research Support

What does modern research show about Brahmi?

Take 1/4 teaspoon of powder mixed in warm milk or ghee in the morning, or a capsule with breakfast. For meditation support, a small spoonful of Brahmi Ghrita on the tongue is the traditional preparation.

Cautions & Considerations

  • May interact with thyroid medications and sedatives; isolated case reports of bradycardia
  • Effects are cumulative — give it 8–12 weeks for full benefit
